Module description

This module introduces students to a variety of approaches in music analysis. Analytical tools will be learnt through detailed examination of selected compositions from diverse historic periods and geographic areas, with an emphasis on tonal music. The specific focus may vary year to year but the issues considered will typically include: the study of musical forms and their relationship with harmonic processes and motivic development; dramatic shape; use of text; and instrumentation. The module will take a comparative view of different analytical methods and their relevance to creative practice. It will also encourage and improve students' abilities to listen analytically and to reflect upon musical experience.

 

Assessment details

Two analytical essays - 1500 word analytical essay (33%) and 2500 word analytical essay (67%).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 5 module and in particular will have:

  • an awareness of some of the issues pertinent to analysing music
  • an ability to use analytical tools applicable to various repertoires
  • a capacity to recount and reflect on the sensory experience of music
  • an understanding of analytical listening strategies applicable to the repertoire
  • a knowledge of how analytical understanding shapes performance and reception
  • analytical research skills suitable for diverse projects, readership and audiences
  • critical reading and debating skills in the field of music analysis
