Module description

Both the causes and results of natural hazards provide a dramatic intersection between physical and social geography. Many disasters that occur are a complex mix of natural events and human processes, including political, social and economic. This module aims to provide an overview of natural hazards such as floods, severe storms, droughts, multi-hazard interrelationships, the perception of natural hazards, and the complex relationship that exists between natural hazards and society.

The module is structured (subject to change) as lectures, and seminar sessions which include activities and smaller group discussions. An example of a year’s lectures/seminars (subject to change) include:

 

  • Vulnerability, exposure, hazard and risk

  • Multi-hazard Approaches to Assessing Natural Hazards

  • Floods

  • Windstorms

  • Drought

  • A Brief Introduction to Risk Perception and the Perception of Hazards in the UK

Assessment details

Semester 1-only study abroad students will be set an alternative assessment to the exam part of the assessment if the January exam is not online.  

Learning outcomes

By the module’s end you should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Understanding of fundamental causes and effects of several kinds of natural hazards
  • Ability to access pertinent information on different aspects of natural hazards using books, journals and the internet.
