Module description
Quantitative research methods, that is descriptions and analyses that use numbers to describe and make inferences about the world, are widely used in educational research. They can be powerful tools for making generalisations about significant educational variables such as achievement, attitudes and engagement and can uncover important differences in the educational outcomes of groups (for example, across gender, ethnic and other groups). In this module you will be introduced to the assumptions that underpin the use of quantitative research methods and consider where they are, and are not, appropriate research tools. You will learn when and how to use several descriptive and inferential quantitative methods.
The module offers the opportunity to use these methods on the influential OECD's PISA data set. By carrying out those analyses, you will gain the tools to critique how researchers apply and draw conclusions from quantitative methods.
The module will be delivered online with a mix of live and pre-recorded lectures, and collaborative seminars so that students are able to learn both from subject specialist academic experts and their peers. The online seminars will give an opportunity for students to practice using quantitative software packages with their peers whilst receiving support and feedback from a tutor.

Educational aims & objectives
This module will support students' critical understanding of, and ability to use, quantitative research methods and data using PISA data as a context. Students will be introduced to the nature of quantitative research, the assumptions underlying quantitative research methods and the use of numerical data to describe and reform teaching and learning. Students will become able to critique the choice and application of quantitative methods and the analyses and inferences resulting from their use. These aims will be realised through the examination of OECD PISA data with a variety of quantitative methods. The use of international data will ensure students can engage with contemporary educational issues across multiple contexts and scales.
Specifically, the module will enable students to:
- Explore the assumptions and theoretical frameworks underpinning the use of quantitative research.
- Develop proficiency in selecting appropriate quantitative tools.
- Use a range of quantitative tools to analyse educational data sets.
- Critique the quantitative tools and associated findings in published education studies across international, national, and local contexts.
- Gain knowledge of quantitative research findings in quantitative educational research.
