Module description

This module provides an in-depth critical introduction to the various histories, traditions and practices of selected music cultures associated with a given region (e.g., the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America) and their relationship to broader social, political and historical issues.

 

Assessment details

  • 2000 Word Essay (60%)
  • Take-away Examination (40%)

Educational aims & objectives

To provide a detailed understanding of the various histories, traditions and practices of selected music cultures associated with a given region (e.g., the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America).

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 5 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate:

  • A thorough understanding of the various histories, traditions and practices of selected music cultures in a given region
  • A good understanding of the relationship between the musics of this region and wider social, political and historical issues
  • An ability to discuss a range of relevant scholarly texts and to make use of them in a coherent, persuasive argument
