Module description

This module provides a unique combination of theory and practice. Based on the understanding of the need for 'global citizens' to be competent in more than one language, the module presents the main language learning theories, as well as different approaches to the teaching and learning of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Students have the opportunity to apply this theoretical knowledge to their own experience of language learning. They will undertake six hours of studying a new language of their choice, and will be ask to reflect on and analyse this experience in their own language learning case study.    

Assessment details

(1) One 15-minute group presentation (20%)

(2) One 2,500 word essay (80%)

Educational aims & objectives

  • to develop awareness of the need for learning languages (other than English) in a globalised world
  • to develop understanding of approaches to the study of language acquisition
  • to develop understanding of the meaning of language/communicative competence and gain insights how language competence is assessed
  • develop an awareness of learning styles, strategies and individual differences in language learning
  • to develop the ability to critically reflect on the experience of learning a language ab initio
  • to apply theories of second language acquisition to your own experience of language learning
  • to learn carrying out case study research and gathering qualitative, introspective and retrospective data

  • evaluate different approaches to language teaching/learning
  • carry out a small case study of your own language learning
  • relate your own language learning experience to theories of language acquisition
