Although pragmatics lies at the heart of communicative competence, and L2 pragmatics has been widely researched, it plays a very minor role in language teaching. This module addresses the gap between empirical research on learners' use of English pragmatics and the paucity of pragmatic instruction in the classroom. It offers practical applications of pragmatic theory by introducing students to research on interlanguage pragmatics and the acquisition of pragmatics and linking it to classroom practice.
It enhances (future) teachers' pragmatic awareness and reflective teaching by addressing a wide range of contextual and learner-specific factors relevant to the use and acquisition of L2 pragmatics. It reviews existing teaching materials and provides guidelines for developing lesson plans focusing on different aspects of pragmatics.
