This module examines a variety of representations of authorship in literature from antiquity to the modern period. Concentrating on key texts in which the author- or artist-figure is central and a reflection on the writer's mission is sustained, the module explores works ranging from ancient accounts of inspiration to modern ones such as James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Students will encounter texts from a range of literatures covered elsewhere in the programme, assisting them with the selection of options in the future. They will also be in a position to reflect more fully on the ways in which literary representations of the artist's position – central or marginal, assertive or defensive, social or unsocial – relate to the historical context of different periods and places.
