This module introduces important theoretical and methodological issues in music studies, with an emphasis on their practical application for students in field and/or archival research and in academic writing.

Educational aims & objectives

To introduce important theoretical and methodological issues in music studies, with an emphasis on their practical application, as appropriate for the second year of study.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 5 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate:

  • A thorough understanding of a variety of important theories and methods in music studies and the debates around them
  • A good understanding of the uses of these theories and methods in music studies and their histories in scholarly writing
  • An ability to employ a range of theories and methods in both practical research and in coherent, persuasive arguments.
