This module will enable students to engage with a series of recent topics in Metaphysics.
The module in 2025-26 will be focused on necessity, possibility, impossibility, and essence.
Issues we might consider in the module include: What is the best metaphysical account of possibility and necessity? Should we understand possibility and necessity in terms of possible worlds? What are possible worlds? Should we admit the existence of impossible worlds as well as possible worlds? If so, what are impossible worlds? What is essence? Should we give an account of necessity in terms of essence? Or an account of essence in terms of necessity?
One one-hour weekly lecture and one one-hour weekly seminar over ten weeks.
King’s College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide up-to-date, innovative and relevant programmes of study. Therefore, modules offered may change. We suggest you keep an eye on the course finder on our website for updates.
Please note that modules with a practical component will be capped due to educational requirements, which may mean that we cannot guarantee a place to all students who elect to study this module.
