About the Virtual Reality Research Group

About-web

The Virtual Reality (VR) Lab is led by Dr Lucia Valmaggia and is a multidisciplinary group of clinical academics, neuroscientists, post-docs and students.

Our work aims to improve the understanding of the mechanisms, which play a role in the onset and maintenance of mental health problems. We also develop new assessment and treatment VR environments to improve the well-being in people with mental health problems.

The decreasing costs and increasing convenience and power of digital media is creating a revolution in healthcare and new technologies are affecting the way we provide and access care.

VR can enable the assessment of cognitions, emotions and behaviour in an ecologically valid environment.  It is becoming accessible and in the next few years immersive 3D head mounted displays such as the Oculus Rift or headsets which can be used with a mobile phone will soon be as common as the Xbox and the Playstation are nowadays.

In our research to date we have focused on the use of VR to research and assess mental health symptoms and neuropsychological functioning.

Moving forward we are increasing our expertise in developing VR assessment and VR assisted therapy packages which can be used in clinical settings.
