Biography

Alessandra received her Masters degree in Molecular Biology and her PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy). During her PhD she joined the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge, UK as a visiting scientist. While there she focused on understanding the impact of alternative splicing on the function of transcription factors. She completed her postdoc studies at University College London as a member of Prof. Nicholas Luscombe’s group, identifying mechanisms of post-transcriptional regulation on a genomic-scale. Alessandra currently has affiliations with the Francis Crick Institute, Farr Institute, EMBL-EBI.

Research interests

My research interests lie mostly in genomics and computational biology. My current research is exploring how genetic variation between cells impacts on their phenotypic behavior in culture. Future projects will aim to understand how disease-associated mutations impact on cell behavior. In fact, what appears to be the same disease can be caused by mutations in many different genes. Alternatively, many different mutations can occur in the same gene, producing clinical consequences that vary across patients. A key objective of research in our group is to integrate genomic data from large-scale population-based health research studies that will give access to genetic variants associated with a wide variety of human conditions. The generation of disease-relevant cell types will help to understand how the variants impact cell behaviors. The link to extensive clinical disease-related information from NHS data (i.e. GP records) will allow correlations between genetic and health records.
