Wellcome Trust PhD Student Cohort 2018
While completing my undergraduate and master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Milan in Italy, I worked on two very different research projects. One examined the molecular mechanisms of stress in the development of depression (University of Milan) and the other focused on the crystallisation of a Dengue virus protein for drug discovery purposes (internship at University College London). After graduating from my master’s, I enrolled in a year long post-bac program at the National Institutes of Health, USA. As an ORISE fellow I worked on a basic cell biology project, looking at the interplay between structure and function of the endoplasmic reticulum.
In the Wellcome Trust ‘Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine’ Four-Year PhD Programme I am looking forward to combining my previous lab experience with my academic background in biotechnology and my strong interest in translational research. Additionally, the first-year rotation projects provide a great opportunity to work in different research groups, explore different areas of stem cell biology and gain a better understanding of the field of regenerative medicine before embarking on a long-term PhD project.
