Welcome from Vice Dean Professor Dame Til Wykes
The School of Mental Health & Psychological Sciences comprises the departments of Psychology; Centre for Social Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP); Health Service & Population Research; and Biostatistics & Health Informatics.
Our School includes more than 100 Principal Investigators, with research programmes spanning a very wide range of areas from childhood to old age, from basic research through treatment development and implementation, and on to healthcare and society.
This School is home to many of the basic and evaluative sciences (e.g. psychology, health economics, statistics, informatics) that underpin IoPPN research; and expertise (psychology, service research and improvement science) that improves the impact of scientific breakthroughs across King’s Health Partners. Our teaching and research links across the whole IoPPN.
We house several world leading assets:
- The Service User Research Enterprise (SURE) – the world’s largest university group to undertake research that tests the effectiveness of services and treatments from the perspective of people with mental health problems and their carers
- Our Psychology department offers one of the world’s most prestigious and longest running clinical psychology courses
- The SGDP Centre, which undertakes research on the impact and interplay between genetic, environmental and developmental factors
Embracing research, education and clinical translation
As with the other IoPPN Schools, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences embraces research, education and clinical translation aiming to further understand and improve mental health and brain disease and train the next generation of researchers and practitioners.
The School is affiliated with the King’s Clinical Trials Unit – a centre of excellence which helps research teams throughout the country carry out clinical trials safely and to a high scientific standard.
We are also proud to have launched King’s first BSc Psychology in September 2015. The programme has a thriving cohort.
