Clinical academic training programmes

A clinical academic is a qualified healthcare professional who also works in academia, typically in research, teaching, or both. They balance their time between working in the clinical area conducting research that contributes to the scientific understanding of their field. Every clinical academic post is different, depending on the specialism, experience, and interests of the individual.

The Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care has strong collaborative links with partners across the NHS. We work with our health partners to develop our students, to enhance our research and to find novel solutions that help tackle local, national and global health challenges.

There are six NHS England / NIHR ICA Pathway schemes. Each scheme requires a different level of research experience. The schemes are:

Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) bridging schemes

The NHS England Workforce, Training and Development (fomerly HEE) / National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme provides research training awards for health and social care professionals, excluding doctors and dentists, who wish to develop careers that combine research and research leadership with continued practice and professional development.

This scheme is funded by NHS England Workforce, Training and Education and offered by London South Bank University in collaboration with King's College London.

Applicants to the bridging schemes must hold registration with one of the ICA approved regulatory bodies or have plans in place to hold the required registration by the proposed award start date.

The pathway has been developed to support clinical academics, from research tasters for those who have no research experience, through to doctoral and senior post-doctoral research fellowships.

Key features of the scheme

  • Salary is covered, regardless of the level of the applicant.

  • Successful bids are those which demonstrate a strong, collaborative working partnership between the Trust and the university.

  • Clear commitment to the academic and clinical development of the individual.

  • Support for projects that are dedicated to proving patient care.
