Evidence Development and Incubation Team

The Evidence Development and Incubation Team (EDIT) provides evaluation services for a diverse range of clients across the public and third sector.

EDIT was founded to address the growing need for high-quality casual evidence that shows “what works” in public services, education, and other policy areas.

The team has substantial experience in developing and evaluating programmes, and intimate knowledge of the What Works movement as both organisational leaders and evaluation partners. We have particular expertise in schools, further and higher education, and other complex social programmes, including children's social care and homelessness.

We use strong mixed methods evaluation approaches, including experimental and quasi-experimental field research alongside surveys and qualitative approaches to understand the "who, what and how" of programme impact.

Our past projects have included:

  • Programme and impact evaluations
  • Process, implementation, and cost evaluations
  • Randomised controlled trials (RCTs)
  • Capacity-building projects to support organisations in developing their evaluation strategies and upskilling staff

We also work with new evaluation teams and What Works Centres when they’re setting up. We have close connections to What Works for Children’s Social Care, are on the evaluation panel for the Youth Endowment Fund, conducting a large impact evaluation for the Centre for Homelessness Impact, and incubated the Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes from 2019 to early 2021, before its spinout.
