Institute of Liver Studies

The Institute of Liver Studies (ILS) at King’s is a clinical academic partnership between King’s College Hospital and King’s College London that encompasses a multi-disciplinary team devoted to the care of patients will all types of liver diseases and coordinates all research and education in this field.

The ILS is one of Europe’s largest comprehensive academic liver centres. It hosts a world-renowned adult and paediatric liver transplant program (approximately 250 cases per year) and has unparalleled expertise in the management of acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure, autoimmune and metabolic liver diseases, hepato-biliary neoplasms, viral hepatitis and paediatric liver diseases. Founded by Prof. Roger Williams in 1966, and currently led by Prof Alberto Sanchez-Fueyo, the ILS now comprises more than 60 staff members representing the fields of hepatology, hepatobiliary surgery, intensive care, histopathology, immunology, genetics and cell and molecular biology. The ILS unifying mission is to integrate fundamental, translational and clinical investigation to ensure that patients with liver diseases receive the best possible care.  

Located at King’s Denmark Hill campus, the ILS encompasses a large office space accommodating clinical and academic staff (3rd floor Cheyne wing, King’s College Hospital), the Alex Mowat Paediatric Research Laboratories at King’s College Hospital, and additional wet laboratory facilities at King’s College London James Black Centre.
