Updates to the Application Process for 2026/27
Both exchange and fee-paying applicants will now be asked to select 10 Module Preferences during their application.
-
Your offer to study at King's will not be affected by your module preferences; we are asking you to fill out this section so we can let you know ahead of time whether you are eligible for consideration for the modules you like. This information is supposed to help you in making an informed choice on whether you wish to accept or decline your offer with us at King's.

A detailed Exchange Application guide can be found at this link. Please read it very carefully before submitting your application to avoid mistakes that will delay the processing of your application.
New Assessment Criteria for Fee-paying applicants
From 2026/27, fee-paying study abroad applications will no longer be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, the Admissions team will assess applications on three criteria: academic excellence (40%), personal statement (45%), and academic references (15%), to ensure a fair and equitable approach.
-
In order to be considered for the Study Abroad programme, you will need to submit your application by the stated deadlines. Please take your time to submit your best application!
-
The minimum academic requirement for the programme is of a UK 2.1 (60%) equivalent, which corresponds to GPA 3.3/4.0 on the U.S. GPA scale. International academic requirements will be measured against the UK grading scale.
-
Applications submitted before the deadline which fulfil our entry requirements are not guaranteed to be offered a place; they may be made unsuccessful due to limited capacity on our Study Abroad programmes.

Study Abroad Application Guidance Notes
- To apply for a Study Abroad programme at King’s you will need to first register on our online application system and then complete our online application form. Detailed guidance on how to apply can be found here: Fee-paying applicants | Exchange applicants.
- If you are coming on Exchange, rather than as a fee-paying student (free mover), your home institution will first need to nominate you - details of the nomination process can be found here. You should only apply for the Exchange programme if you have received confirmation of your nomination from King's. Applications from fee-paying students who apply as exchange students will be disregarded and will not be processed.

If you have already submitted an application and have a query regarding that application, please send a message via the Admissions Portal.
- The admission team aims to process applications within 6-8 weeks, but it might take a little longer at busy times. Please do not chase up applications within that timeframe, as it will only delay the process.
- Please use studyabroad@kcl.ac.uk for any queries prior to submitting your application.

Academic Reference
Students nominated for exchange by their home university under an existing exchange agreement do not need to provide references, as the nomination acts as reference.
- In your application, please supply the email address of one academic referee. This must be a professional academic, professor or otherwise, who teaches in the subject areas which you intend to study at King’s and who is familiar with your academic abilities and suitability for our programmes. We will not accept references from sports coaches or those focused on other extra curricular activities.
- The reference provided should be from an academic who is currently teaching you within the relevant level of study to which you are applying to study abroad at King's. For example, if you are applying for the Postgraduate Taught programme, your reference should be written by an academic who is teaching you at postgraduate level (not by a former undergraduate professor).
- If you are applying for the Postgraduate Research Study Abroad Programme, your reference should be written by your current doctoral supervisor.
- King's will contact your referee directly for your reference by email. The reference should be written on university letterhead, be signed by the academic staff member (or sent in secure electronic format) and include mention of your academic performance, potential, and your suitability for study abroad, especially for the academic subjects to which you are applying to study whilst at King's.
- Referees can also send their reference directly to studyabroad@kcl.ac.uk.
- Referees must submit the reference to the application portal or email to studyabroad@kcl.ac.uk no more than 7 days after the student has submitted their application on the portal. Students without a reference after 7 days will be made unsuccessful from the programme and there will be no reinstatement.
