Module description

This module introduces students to a variety of philosophical thinking from around the world. It prompts students to explore some key questions and concepts in philosophy across different religious traditions and time periods. The religious traditions to be explored in this module may include, but are not limited to: Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.

2,000 words of short answer question (100%)

Educational aims & objectives

  • To introduce students to a variety of philosophical thinking from around the world
  • To help students to examine philosophical texts from around the world by applying the major critical methods—e.g., historical-critical, theological, literary, ideological, and sociological perspectives
  • To explore theoretical models that underpin reading and interpretation

Learning outcomes

Generic skills• Read critically and interpret primary sources in translation• Analyse and evaluate secondary literature• Think cross-culturally yet with sensitivity to historical and social difference• Write critical essays on primary and secondary source materialCourse specific skills• Explore philosophical questions and concepts across different religious traditions from around the world• Engage critically with diverse philosophical texts in translation• Evaluate how different global traditions frame truth, knowing and certainty in distinct ways• Respectfully engage with the ideas of each 'other' in class discussion• Develop and sustain an argument or how to justify a point of view• Critically frame and question Eurocentric conceptions of philosophy (or engage with contemporary debates on decolonizing philosophy)
