Module description

Greek poetry of the third century BC renaissance is both absorbing and fascinating in itself, and of huge historical significance for its influence on Roman poetry of the late Republican and Augustan periods, and thus on European literature more broadly.

This module offers an intensive study of key poems by Callimachus– a key figure for the history of Graeco-Latin literary and intellectual tradition- including both complete and fragmentary works, and epigram as well as large-scale compositions. Class time will be devoted to a combination of close reading of texts in the original Greek and discussion of larger issues of interpretation, bearing both on the individual poet, and the cultural
