Module description

Syllabus

Classical and quantum dynamics of the point particle, classical dynamics and quantisation of the open and closed bosonic strings, the dynamics of branes, the supersymmetric particle, inconsistency of Einstein gravity and quantum theory. More advanced topics which may include D branes, the free gauge covariant open string theory, the Brink-Schwarz particle and electromagnetic duality symmetries.

Prerequisites 

The module assumes that you have an understanding of special relativity and quantum field theory. In addition, you should be familiar with General Relativity. You are advised to take  7CCMMS32 Quantum Field Theory.

Assessment details

2 hour written examination.

The main aim of the module is to give a first introduction to string theory which can be used as a basis for undertaking research in this and related subjects.
