Alumni Careers Speed Meet held for Languages Students
On the 5th March a Careers ‘Speed Meet’ organised specifically for students taking Modern Languages degrees was held at the Strand campus. This event, organised by King’s Careers and Employability and students, was attended by around forty students from the French, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies and German departments. The Speed Meet aimed to provide students with a glimpse of some of the various careers they could pursue using their Languages degrees.
Some of King’s own staff from some of the languages departments offered their useful insight into the world of academia alongside representatives and employers from sectors such as teacher training, publishing, law, translation and public relations. Some of these representatives were also King’s alumni who had studied languages degrees themselves at King’s. During the first hour of the evening, students had the opportunity to circulate the room in groups and to fire as many questions as they could at each of the representatives within a given time. This allowed the students to ask simple, straightforward and direct questions about the different potential career paths, and also gave them a chance to find out about careers they may not have considered before.
The second half of the event was less of a formal set up, and students had the opportunity to mingle with the academics and representatives over wine and nibbles.
The event was kindly sponsored by Saxoncourt Teacher Training, a company who offer courses to achieve the CELTA qualification needed to teach English as a foreign language as well as job opportunities for suitable candidates in its English schools around the world. Saxoncourt will be holding an open evening this Tuesday (12 March), which would be ideal for any students interested in finding out more about the teacher training programmes they offer. The open evening will take place at 6pm in the Saxoncourt offices in Westminster (59 South Molton Street).
