Success in Department of Health Research Centre bid

DECEMBER 12, 2006

The Institute of Psychiatry has been successful in a joint bid with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for a Department of Health Research Centre of Excellence. The award was recently announced by the Department of Health as part of its Best Research for Best Health initiative. It was one of two successful bids by King's College London with its partner NHS Trusts. A decision on a third bid is awaited and if awarded, King's will be the only university to provide academic partnership in the three categories of research centre.

The Specialist Centre, to be directed by Professor Simon Lovestone, will allow the Institute of Psychiatry to accelerate its programme of translational research so that new discoveries in the area of mental health can yield clinical benefits for patients. The new Centre will provide a strong basis for new ways to investigate, diagnose, treat and support people with mental illnesses and their carers.
