Focus on World Mental Health Day: photography exhibition opens at the Institute of Psychiatry

OCTOBER 09, 2006

This year’s World Mental Health Day theme is ‘Building Awareness – reducing risk: Mental Illness and Suicide’ and to highlight this day, the Institute of Psychiatry in Denmark Hill is opening a new photographic exhibition entitled ‘Focus on Mental Health’ which will be open to the public from the 10th October until 27th October 2006.

This exhibition will show works by the artists Lauren Shear and Mark Drinkwater and ties into the theme of this year’s world mental health day, helping to stimulate debate about the importance of the arts in developing an understanding of mental distress.

The Gallery at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) promotes the work of artists with links to the IoP’s focus on mental health care and research, with the aim of widening debate and removing the stigma often associated with issues of mental health.  It also supports the rich history of hospitals holding collections relating to health care and the historical benefits such collections bring to the arts and medicine.

The exhibition will be open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 7pm and at weekends from 10am to 4pm and is accessible through the main entrance of the Institute of Psychiatry on De Crespigny Park, SE5.
