Richard Hoban Book Prize 2012
You are invited to participate in the Richard Hoban Prize 2012. The prize was given to the department by the family in his memory, to be awarded to the student who does the best performance in Spanish of a poem.
This year, for the first time, we are opening the prize to performance in Portuguese and Catalan, as well as in Spanish, and there will be a further award for the best rendering of a translation of a poem into English.
For the prize in poetry translation, students may translate a poem from Spanish, Portuguese or Catalan into English. Poems may be from any period, they should be no longer than 30 lines, and you should state whether your translation is a) a version or b) a contemporary rendition.
By ‘version’, we understand a translation of the poem into English that remains close to the style and language of the original in Spanish and aims at retaining its own contemporary cultural environment in English. By ‘contemporary rendition’ we understand a translation of the poem into English that aims to bring the style and language of the original to a 21st century English-speaking cultural environment. Each participant will read the translation. The original must be provided to the Department (splas@kcl.ac.uk) on Wednesday 28 March by 17.00.
The poems are below. Please take time to prepare your reading, remembering that you want to communicate as effectively as possible your understanding of the poem.
For each category there will be a prize of £100. For the Richard Hoban prize for a poem performed in Spanish the winner may choose to be awarded a case of red Rioja wine.
The event which will take place in room K0.18 (18.00-20.00) will be followed by a departmental reception.
If you wish to enter you should let us know by emailing splas@kcl.ac.uk by Wednesday 28 March at 17.00.
