NIHR BRC for Mental Health launches new website

08 April 2009

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) specialist Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Mental Health at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), Kings College London (KCL), has launched its new website (www.brc.iop.kcl.ac.uk) offering opportunities for training and detailing the pioneering research being undertaken by the BRC.

The BRC is one of ten national University/NHS Foundation Trust partnerships funded by the NIHR to ensure that discoveries in medical science are turned into improved healthcare for patients as quickly as possible. The BRC for Mental Health represents a unique partnership between two internationally recognised organisations SLaM and IoP KCL.  It is the only BRC specialising in mental health and brings together researchers, clinicians and allied health professionals, to build on a strong scientific base in biological research, psychology, epidemiology and other disciplines.  The research is focused on meeting clinical needs so that service users benefit more quickly from new discoveries, better assessments and earlier, more individualised treatments for a wide range of disorders.

The website gives an overview of translational research across ten research themes.  The seven disorder-specific themes cover Antisocial and Aggressive Behaviour; Clinical Neurosciences; Common Mental Disorders; Dementia and Related Syndromes; Young People and Mental Health; Psychosis; and Substance Use Disorders.  The three cross-cutting themes address research relevant to all areas of the BRC and include Analytical Methodologies and Biomedical Technologies themes, which are developing novel technology platforms and methods for supporting translational research; and Stakeholder Participation, which ensures that service user and carer involvement is integral to the work of the BRC.

The BRC is committed to training the next generation of translational researchers.  Current research training opportunities include clinical and non-clinical fellowships and SLaM Allied Health Professionals research secondment opportunities. The website also features profiles of BRC researchers and latest BRC news.
