Britain Alone
Centre of European Law Conference
A stellar array of academics and practitioners in the field
of European Law came together at Senate House on Europe Day, 9 May 2014,
to debate the relationship between EU law and the United Kingdom and
explore legal challenges facing the EU.
The conference, under the title ‘Britain Alone’, was organised
by the Centre of European Law, King’s College London in association
with the Institute of European Law, University of Hull. The all-day event
included four sessions.
Morning sessions dealt respectively with Constitutional
Issues, chaired by Lord Reed of the Supreme Court, and Britain and the
Word, chaired by Professor Sir Alan Dashwood QC of Henderson Chambers
and Visiting Professor at King’s
Afternoon sessions discussed Opting In - Opting Out, focusing
on freedom, security and justice and criminal law and was chaired by
Professor Sir Francis Jacobs QC, President of the Centre of European Law,
King’s, and EU Banking Union, chaired by Professor Andrea Biondi, Director
of the Centre of European Law, The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s.
The conference was attended by 140 delegates. It was
followed by a drinks reception and the launch of the new edition of Patrick J.
Birkinshaw’s ‘European Public Law: The Achievement and the Challenge’ published
by Kluwer Law International.
‘Britain Alone’ is part of a series of events staged to
celebrate the Centre’s 40th anniversary year, the highlight of which will
be a lecture and reception by Justice Vassilios Skouris, President of the
European Court of Justice on 1 October 2014.
